Discovering Your “In Christ” Identity: A Deep Dive into Your Spiritual Blessings

Imagine standing at the foot of a mountain, not of rock and stone, but of blessings—spiritual blessings, overflowing and boundless, all freely given to you “in Christ.” Ephesians 1 is an unveiling, a panoramic view of this mountain range, revealing the riches of your inheritance and the depth of your identity in Christ.

Have you ever felt a longing for something more, a sense of incompleteness that no earthly possession can satisfy? Ephesians 1 answers that longing, revealing that if you are in Christ, you are already complete, already blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. This isn’t a promise of future blessings, but a declaration of present reality.

Let’s embark on a journey through Ephesians 1, guided by the Holy Spirit, to discover the life-altering truths that define who we are “in Christ.”

God’s Lavish Grace: The Source of Every Blessing

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places…” – Ephesians 1:3

Paul begins this letter with a resounding declaration of praise, acknowledging God as the source of every spiritual blessing. This isn’t a trickle, but a torrent; not a select few, but every spiritual blessing. These blessings aren’t merely earthly or temporal; they are spiritual, residing in the heavenly places, and therefore, eternal and unshakeable.

Consider James 1:17, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” This reinforces the consistent, unwavering nature of God’s blessings. He doesn’t give and take away; His gifts are perfect and enduring.

We must understand that these blessings are not earned or deserved. They are a direct result of God’s grace, His unmerited favor, bestowed upon us simply because He loves us. As Ephesians 2:8-9 proclaims, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Chosen in Him: A Love Story Written in Eternity

“…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love…” – Ephesians 1:4

Before the universe burst into being, before the first star twinkled, God had you in mind. He chose you, not based on anything you would do, but based on His own loving purpose.

This concept of being chosen “before the foundation of the world” is mind-boggling, stretching our finite understanding to grasp the infinite. Yet, it underscores the depth of God’s love and the intentionality of His plan. As Romans 8:29-30 states, “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”

God’s choice is not arbitrary; it’s rooted in His desire to make us holy and blameless, to conform us to the image of His Son. We are chosen in Him, meaning our identity and destiny are inextricably linked to Jesus Christ.

Predestined to Adoption: Welcomed into God’s Family

“…he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will…” – Ephesians 1:5

Adoption is a powerful metaphor for God’s love, signifying a complete and irrevocable acceptance into His family. In Roman culture, adoption was a deliberate act, granting the adopted child all the rights and privileges of a natural-born heir.

Similarly, God, in His grace, adopts us as His sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. We are no longer orphans, strangers, or outsiders, but beloved members of His family, with full access to the Father and all the blessings He has to offer. Galatians 4:4-7 beautifully illustrates this: “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

This adoption is not based on our performance, but on His “good pleasure,” His loving will. It’s a testament to His unconditional love and His desire to bring us into intimate relationship with Himself. As Romans 8:15 reminds us, “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!””

Accepted in the Beloved: Resting in God’s Approval

“…to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” – Ephesians 1:6

The phrase “accepted in the Beloved” speaks volumes about our standing with God. We are accepted, not because of our own righteousness, but because of the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, imputed to us through faith.

This means that God doesn’t love us because we are good; He loves us because we are in Christ, and Christ is perfectly pleasing to Him. Our acceptance is not conditional or based on our performance; it’s a gift of grace, freely given and eternally secure. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

This understanding frees us from the burden of striving to earn God’s approval and allows us to rest in His unconditional love and acceptance.

Redemption Through His Blood: Purchased from Slavery

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace…” – Ephesians 1:7

Redemption is a powerful word that signifies liberation and freedom. In the ancient world, it referred to the act of buying back a slave or paying a ransom to secure someone’s release.

In Christ, we are redeemed from the slavery of sin and the bondage of darkness. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our freedom, offering His own life as a sacrifice to redeem us from the consequences of our sin. As 1 Peter 1:18-19 explains, “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”

Through His blood, we receive the forgiveness of our trespasses, meaning our sins are not merely covered over, but completely washed away. God remembers them no more, casting them as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).

Sealed with the Holy Spirit: Marked as God’s Own

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise…” – Ephesians 1:13

Imagine receiving a valuable document sealed with a unique insignia, signifying its authenticity and security. The Holy Spirit is God’s seal upon our lives, signifying that we belong to Him and that our salvation is secure.

The Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance, the “first installment” of the glory that awaits us in heaven. He empowers us, guides us, and transforms us from the inside out, conforming us to the image of Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 confirms this: “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an influence; He is a person, the third person of the Trinity, who indwells every believer, marking them as God’s own possession.

Inheritance: Riches Beyond Imagination

“…in him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will…” – Ephesians 1:11

As believers “in Christ,” we have obtained an inheritance that far surpasses any earthly treasure. We are co-heirs with Christ, sharing in His eternal inheritance, which includes all the riches of God’s grace, the blessings of His kingdom, and the glory of His presence. Romans 8:17 solidifies this truth: “and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

This inheritance is not subject to decay, corruption, or theft. It’s an unshakable reality that cannot be taken away from us. Earthly trials and tribulations may come our way, but they cannot diminish the eternal riches that are ours in Christ.

Living in Light of Our Blessings: A Transformed Life

Understanding and embracing these spiritual blessings is not merely an intellectual exercise; it’s a call to live a transformed life, reflecting the wealth and privilege we have in Christ.

It means:

  • Knowing our identity: Recognizing that we are chosen, loved, accepted, redeemed, and sealed by the Holy Spirit.
  • Walking in freedom: Breaking free from the bondage of sin, guilt, and shame, and living in the liberty that Christ has won for us.
  • Embracing our purpose: Discovering our gifts and talents and using them to serve God and others.
  • Living with confidence: Knowing that we are secure in Christ, protected by His power, and guided by His Spirit.
  • Sharing our hope: Sharing the good news of God’s love and grace with those who are lost and hurting.

Ephesians 1 is an invitation to step into the fullness of our “in Christ” identity, to experience the overflowing abundance of God’s grace, and to live a life that reflects the glory of His name. Let us, therefore, walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called (Ephesians 4:1), knowing that we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
